A Kingdom Perspective on Life’s Tornadoes

We all certainly remember the famous movie “The Wizard of Oz”. That Dorothy gal was quite the dreamer. Auntie Em knew this well. When Dorothy was trying to tell Auntie Em what Miss Gilch wanted to do to Toto for ruining her garden, Auntie Em’s response was, “Now Dorothy, stop imagining things. You always get yourself into a fret over nothing.” Then Auntie Em, quite strongly I might add, told Dorothy to help out and to not get into any trouble. And what does our Dorothy do next? Dream some more! Thinking out loud she begins to muse, “A place where there isn’t any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place Toto? There must be. It’s not a place you can get to by a boat or train. It’s far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain, somewhere over the rainbow”…and that famous song begins. Little did Dorothy know what would happen next. Her troubled world was about to be troubled even more. A tornado! And the result of that tornado would thrust her into The Land of Oz. Once there, all she would want was to be back home, troubled or not. So clicking the heals of her sparkly red shoes, she whispers over and over again, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”

So why am I presenting you with this movie? Because I believe there are those who are storm tossed, living in anxiety and fear because of our own troubled world today. Dorothy was looking beyond the rainbow for a place of peace, a place where there would be no trouble. Daily in our world there is disturbing news flowing from our TVs, radios, smart phones, computers and on and on it goes. How are we coping? Jesus did say that we would have trials and trouble in this world, but to be of GOOD CHEER, because He has overcome the world. Are we remembering that the Kingdom of God here on earth that we sometimes can’t see is more real than this world we do see?

We need to find rest and be at peace knowing that God has got this all under control. We need to “see” with Kingdom Eyes. That “seeing” is actually perceiving God’s purpose by gaining a perspective of Him. I love the fact that over the rainbow the characters used were a scarecrow, a tin man and a cowardly lion. Each of them needed to gain very important aspects that were missing in their lives. They were actually aspects that Dorothy’s friends on her farm in Kansas needed in their real lives. The scarecrow needed a brain, the tin man a heart, and the lion courage. What a great analogy! With all that is surrounding us we need to use our brains, have a heart and be strong and courageous.

The Scarecrow….
Dorothy: “How can you talk if you don’t have a brain?”
Scarecrow: “I don’t know…but some people without brains do an awful lot of talking…don’t they?” With all that we hear coming over the airways, much is just commentary and not news. Let’s try to just focus on the news and pray for a situation without having it stirred and inflamed over and over again by commentary after commentary. Too much talk causes unrest.

The Tinman….
Dorothy: “Goodbye Tinman. Oh, don’t cry! You’ll rust so dreadfully.” Tinman: “Now I know I’ve got a heart ’cause it’s breaking’…” Let your heart break as God’s does for all the horrific things that are transpiring and “pray, pray, pray for the Lord’s great grace and mercy to flow to those in need.

The Cowardly Lion….
“Put ’em up, put ’em up! Which one of you first? I’ll fight you both together if you
want. I’ll fight you with one paw tied behind my back. I’ll fight you standing on one foot.
I’ll fight you with my eyes closed… ohh, pullin’ an axe on me, eh? Sneaking up on me, eh? Why, I’ll… Ruff!” Let’s get aggressive with C-C-Courage to see His kingdom come. That Cowardly Lion received a medal of courage. We need to move ahead with the same courageous spirit. Like a passionate wind….with ferocious love…as a holy tornado!
